Prepare for a payment-hardship conversation without making promises

Organize what changed, what you can verify, the questions you want answered, and any terms you need in writing before making a decision.

Start with facts you can support

The CFPB advises consumers who cannot make a credit-card payment to act promptly and contact the card company. For mortgage hardship, it similarly advises contacting the servicer right away. Available options depend on the product, company, account, and circumstances.

Prepare a short description of what changed, whether the problem appears temporary or longer-term, and the amount you believe may be affordable. An estimate is not a promise to pay or acceptance of a specific plan.

  • A current statement and the last four account digits
  • Why the regular payment is difficult right now
  • Income and essential-expense figures you choose to share
  • The payment amount and timing you believe may be realistic
02

Ask questions before agreeing

Ask the creditor or servicer what assistance programs are currently available and what each option changes. Do not assume a pause, reduced payment, or other accommodation is automatic.

  • How long does the option last?
  • Will interest, fees, or missed amounts continue to build?
  • How and when must deferred amounts be repaid?
  • How may the account be reported to consumer reporting companies?
  • Can the complete terms and costs be provided in writing?

Escalate urgent situations

If foreclosure, repossession, a lawsuit, garnishment, or legal papers are involved, preserve the documents and seek qualified help promptly. EZKredit does not calculate legal deadlines or provide legal representation.

For mortgage concerns, the CFPB also points consumers to HUD-approved housing counselors. Credit counseling may be another option for broader budgeting or debt-management help; ask about services and fees before enrolling.

  1. Promise an amount immediately
  2. Ask what options exist and review the terms before deciding
  3. Stop reading account correspondence

Ask what options exist and review the terms before deciding
The goal is to understand available options and their terms. A worksheet or estimate does not create an agreement.
